Residential milieu therapy is a technique used within all the programs on a daily basis to address such issues as:
· parental neglect
· trauma, physical, sexual and/or emotional abuse
· FASD
· ADHD
· Asperger’s Syndrome
· PDD conduct disorders
· placement breakdowns, and/or emotional difficulties
The program's focus is to assist each child or youth to attain his or her optimal potential for emotional, social, and physical functioning. By addressing these issues, we have had success reintegrating children and youth into their families of origin and/or foster placements. Staff encourage, where appropriate, maintenance of contact between the natural family and the child/youth.
The goal of improved self-awareness is supported with the use of appropriate adult modelling and providing understandable limits and controls for our residents. Every case is reviewed with our consultant psychologist, Dr. Anita Halpern. Treatment goals are developed with the staff team to ensure that each child has corrective experiences and an opportunity to work through their individual issues and traumas. If a child needs intensive psychotherapy we will refer, with placing agency agreement, to an appropriate, trained psychologist in the community.
All residents within our residential programs have a guaranteed seat in our day treatment programs. We have two classrooms located in an elementary public school and two classrooms in a public high school. We have an excellent working relationship with these schools and the Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board, which allows our students wonderful integration possibilities.
