Camey Group Home is located on a quiet residential street in Ottawa, Ontario. Since 2006, our highly trained, interdisciplinary staff team has provided residential care and treatment services to vulnerable children, adolescents, and families.
Camey Group Home is licensed by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services and a member of the Ontario Association of Residences Treating Youth.
Who We Serve
We work with boys and young men aged 10-18 who are referred through the Child Welfare system. With a multicultural and multilingual staff, we offer a welcoming and inclusive environment for youth with diverse social identities (i.e.: BPOC, LGBTQ+).
While residents may be unable to live with their family for various reasons, we know that family is central to their lives. Wherever possible, we work to meaningfully engage families in their child’s care.
Our Mission
We provide a safe, caring, and therapeutic living environment. With structured and individualized programming, we support young people to learn new skills, pursue their life goals, and develop positive and lasting relationships.
Our Values:
We believe in the power of youth and families; we create opportunities for them to access knowledge, skills, and supports so they can actively participate in decisions that impact their lives.
Inclusion: We believe that every person has the right to be valued, respected, and supported. We focus on the needs of every individual and create the conditions for them to achieve their full potential.
Strengths-based approaches: We believe that all young people and families have the strengths, resources, and abilities to recover from adversity; we support them to identify what is going well, to do more of it, and to build on it.
Collaboration: We believe that we are better together; we create trusting relationships with youth, families, service partners, and communities to provide coordinated care and strengthen outcomes.
Quality Care: We believe in being accountable and transparent; we engage in ongoing learning to offer the highest quality care.
PROGRAMS
Residential Care:
Camey Group Home has 6 large sunny bedrooms, two common areas, a kitchen, dining room, laundry area, and large backyard. Each resident has their own bedroom, which they are encouraged to decorate and personalize. We can accommodate up to 8 residents, including 6 residents and 2 emergency placements.
Program components include:
Trusting Relationships: With a high staff to youth ratio (1:3), we make it a priority to spend time with residents and their families, to get to know them and develop strong alliances.
Routine and Structure: Providing routine and structure around daily care , we create a safe and supportive environment where residents can experience a sense of stability and calm.
Resident Engagement: Through weekly house meetings, youth have opportunities to express their concerns, support one another, ask questions, and suggest positive changes that will benefit the quality of life for all.
Family Engagement: Ideally, every young person has a parent or guardian who loves and cherishes them and who values their cultural values and traditions. Whenever possible, we engage families and/or those who are significant in the residents’ life in care planning and decision-making.
Cultural Connectedness: We recognize the importance of cultural connectedness and belonging. We are committed to creating a culturally-safe, inclusive, and welcoming space by celebrating differences, engaging residents in awareness-building activities, respecting traditions and holidays, linking youth with cultural and religious groups, and making culturally appropriate food and products available.
Education and Employment: Every resident is supported to achieve their educational and vocational goals, regardless of their school history or learning challenges. Our staff work diligently with schools and boards to develop educational programming, facilitating alternative school placements, home schooling, or independent study as appropriate. Building on a close partnership the Youth Services Bureau, residents have opportunities to participate in paid employability training, job matching, internships, youth mentorship, and more.
